History of Reiki

The founder of Reiki healing was a Japanese man Dr Mikao
Usui, around 1900. He studied scripture to understand how Christ & Buddha healed but had little success. Finally, after 7 yrs searching, he found the knowledge of how Buddha healed from scriptures written down by an unknown disciple of Buddha. Although, he had the knowledge, he did not have the power to heal. He climbed one of the sacred mountains of Japan & meditated for 21days.

On the 21st day, he became aware of a beam of light from the heavens that came shooting towards him. Although, he was afraid, he did not move but was struck by the light and knocked over. Then in rapid succession, he saw before him like bubbles of light the symbols that he had discovered in his study, the key to the healing of Buddha & Jesus. The symbols burned themselves into his memory. After this trance, Dr Usui discovered that he had the power to heal.

For the next 7 years, he worked at a beggar camp in Japan & healed the sick. However, he found that many of the people he had healed,
returned to the camp because they preferred their way of life. Dr Usui realised that it is not enough to heal the physical body, you have to teach appreciation for a new life or new way of living.

He founded the Principles of Reiki" to help heal their thoughts. Dr Usui taught other people how to heal through Reiki & one of these students Chujiro Hayashi took over from Dr Usui & became the master of Reiki. Dr Hayashi was responsible for opening a clinic in Tokyo & kept records of his work.

In 1935, one of his patients was a young woman Hawayo Takata, who was suffering from a tumour. As her symptoms became better from the Reiki healing, she developed a strong desire to learn Reiki & become a healer. Mrs Takata opened a practice in Hawaii & eventually took over from Dr Hayashi as the master of Reiki. Throughout her life, she demonstrated a strong commitment to teach & practise Reiki & introduced the gift of Reiki to the Western World.
