The principles of Reiki are designed to heal on a spiritual or emotional level. It is not enough to heal physical complaints on their own because these complaints are very often due to emotional problems. If people try to follow these 5 simple principles,
they will improve their emotional states & this will help their physical complaints.The philosophy behind "just for today" is that it focuses on the "now" or present time. There is no value in thinking of the past or what might happen in the future - focus on today!
Just for today, I will let go of anger. Anger is very often due to past experiences
"something that happened in the past". If you let go of the past & concentrate on today, then it is not necessary to have anger. You can choose not to be angry! Anger is a negative emotion & may cause physical ailments. Be positive in your mind.
Just for today, I will let go of worry. Worry is a negative emotion about the future or
some future event that may or may not happen. If you focus on the present, then there is no need to worry about the future. It is your personal choice whether to worry or not - be positive in your mind! There is no point in having negative emotions about a future event that might never happen. Concentrate on today!Honour your parents, teachers & elders. Honour in this principle is about having respect for other people & should not be limited to just parents, teachers & elders. Being critical or showing bitterness to someone is a negative emotion & may cause physical ailments. It is much better to praise or have kind thoughts about someone - these are positive emotions. Remember when you are being judgemental about someone that you may not know all the facts. Also, some of our greatest teachers, show us how not to be.
Earn your living honestly. This principle is just not about being honest & living above the law & having moral values but more to do with having value for your job. Having satisfaction about your work & valuing what you do is a positive emotion. If you have no value for what you do, it causes negative emotions & may lead to physical ailments. I know we all have to earn a living but we have a choice about whether to be positive about our work & we can change our jobs.
Show gratitude to every living thing. Being cruel or showing no respect to other living
things is a negative emotion. You are expressing anger or guilt by being cruel. On a spiritual level, all living things are linked. Every living thing is a part of you and you are a part of it. By showing gratitude & kindness to every living thing, you are being kind & feeling good about yourself.By trying to follow these principles, your emotional state will improve & so will your physical state. I know it can be difficult in practice but try to stop being angry, or stop worrying & show no fear. Be kind to yourself & others including living things. Be positive
about yourself & value what you do.
